Wreck-It Ralph 2 – What We Want

We enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph. We enjoyed it a whole lot. We spotted some graffiti about Aerith and ‘All your base are belong to us’ and got to see some lovable characters like Sonic and Pac-Man. After it’s unquestioned success, the creators of Wreck-It Ralph are screaming sequel. We’re likely to see a 2nd installment and a 3rd. So what now?

It’s an idea that’s so original and fun that it could even spawn a spin-off title featuring one of the more popular original characters from Wreck-It Ralph, maybe the soldier girl?

Anyway, yes we were impressed by Wreck-It Ralph but now that the sequel is in the works, what could be next? Where does it go from here? We know the creators of Wreck-It Ralph intend to include Mario in the sequel and the film will probably feature grander locations and bigger game worlds to visit. Hell, we might even see Princess Peach this time around. What we don’t know is; who else will feature in the sequel? We can speculate.

Let’s begin with what we know; The characters have to be Arcade based which would mean characters like Tomb Raider and The Dragonborn are out. The next logical conclusion to make would be that we’ll see more of what we saw in the first film, including the original favourites like Ralph, Vanellope and Fix-It Felix, which in turn (given what we've seen) would mean that we might see some of the following additions in Wreck-It Ralph 2:

Soul Calibur & Tekken

For most of us this was our first exposure to the (then) next-gen fighting game genre. They featured crazy hairstyles, hot women, bulky guys and non-stop action interlaced with a story that we didn’t care much about. The original incarnations of these games were to be found in any place worthy of the name ‘Arcade’ and set the standard for fighting games as we know them today. With a host of many memorable characters in both these titles, I think it’s certain that we’ll see any number of characters from Soul Calibur & Tekken in the sequel(s) to Wreck-It Ralph.

Jurassic Park

Who can forget Sega’s legendary rail shooter, Jurassic Park? We all spent hours playing it back when it was released in arcades in 1994 and it’s still around in some of the bigger (older) arcades. Not to mention it had a very successful follow-up game called Jurassic Park: The Lost World. These were 2 of the few titles that marketed themselves in the ‘ride game’ category. What the hell is a Ride Game? Well, it’s interactive. As you progress and play the game, the seat you sat on moved around to mimic a ‘real’ environment. When the game went left, your seat went left and so on and so forth.

Who’d like to see some dinosaurs in Wreck-It Ralph 2? We would!

Star Wars

You might not be aware of this but 6 years after the first Star Wars film Arcades were filled with a hit game where you shoot down TIE Fighters and ultimately The Death Star. This game was fun for many reasons. The main reason being, oh my god…I’m shooting down TIE Fighters.

Star Wars enjoys enough hype, abuse and cameos but we’d like to see just a small salute to this game, perhaps a TIE Fighter parked somewhere in the background or a reference to The Death Star? This would be pretty easy considering Disney now owns Star Wars.

Ms. Pac-Man

The sequel of course to Pac-Man. Where was Ms. Pac-Man in Wreck-It Ralph 1? Pac-Man, we see right at the start of the movie but will we see Ms.Pac-Man in the sequel? Ms.Pac-Man was basically the sequel to Pac-Man and featured many improvements upon the original Pac-Man, in some ways it was even more popular than the original Pac-Man. That being said, I think we will definitely see Ms.Pac-Man in Wreck-It Ralph 2. In fact I think this is a guaranteed addition.

Asteroids

Who can forget this simple little game? In 1979 it hit Arcades and drove us nuts…even though I was only born years later in 1985 and played my first game of Asteroids 7 years later.

Atari manufactured over 70 000 arcade machines for this game. The main question on everyone’s mind at the time; How could something so simple be this hard? Even by today’s standards Asteroids is pretty damn hard and it was one of the very first games to challenge your reflexes and concentration. Perhaps Ralph can work his way into an Asteroids machine and help out our little ship?

Mortal Kombat

Street Fighter had a strong presence in Wreck-It Ralph but you can’t really mention Street Fighter without mentioning Mortal Kombat. Back in the day you had Street Fighter and then you had Mortal Kombat. Actually making it to the end of Mortal Kombat and defeating Goro was pretty hard when you had to fuel your game exploits with spare change.

Yes, we did see a character resembling Kano in the Bad-Anon meeting near the start of Wreck-It Ralph, remember? There was also a certain someone who resembled Noob. This laid the ground work for more to follow in the sequel. We will definitely see more Mortal Kombat characters in Wreck-It Ralph 2. Which ones we’ll actually see are up for debate but we’re hoping for Sonya and Scorpion.

In closing...

It’s going to be a bit of a wait for Wreck-It Ralph 2 and the only thing that will make it bearable is the fact that Disney is not disappointing when it comes to delivering more of our new favourite characters.

There are several games available based on Wreck-It Ralph including a Fix-It Felix, Jr game available through the Disney website, Wreck-It Ralph for Wii, Nintendo 3DS and DS and if that’s still not enough you can check out Hero’s Duty and Sugar Rush which are available on the Wreck-It Ralph film site. You’ll also be able to play as Ralph & Vanellope in Disneys up and coming title: Disney Infinity which will be released sometime in June 2013.

In closing all I can say is…I hope Disney don’t wreck it.
